Charles & Ray Eames – The Duo of Innovation

Charles Eames (1907–1978) and Ray Kaiser Eames (1912–1988) did not merely help shape Mid-Century Modern — they rethought the method by which furniture is created. Their work does not begin with a design, but with a material and a question: How far can plywood be bent without breaking? How light can a seat shell become without losing its hold? How many people does a good idea reach when it is produced industrially? From this attitude, between 1941 and the late 1970s, a body of work emerged that ranges from the medical leg splint of World War II through the legendary plywood and fiberglass chairs to the Lounge Chair 670/671 of 1956 — and beyond, to films, exhibitions, and the early multimedia presentations commissioned by IBM.

For collectors, the Eames oeuvre is as demanding as it is rewarding: the pieces were manufactured over decades in different facilities — in Los Angeles at Evans Products, from 1946 under license at Herman Miller in Zeeland, Michigan, and in Europe from 1957 at Vitra in Weil am Rhein. Small details — labels, screws, foam densities, veneer layers — determine dating, provenance, and value. Engaging with the Eames means practicing materials science as much as design history.

Characteristic Materials and Technical Signature

The first signature material of the Eames is molded plywood. The Plywood Leg Splint, developed in 1942 for the US Navy — an anatomically shaped leg brace made of birch laminate — served as the laboratory for everything that followed. The same process, the so-called Kazam! process using molds and heat curing, produced the LCW and DCW chairs in 1945/46, as well as plywood screens and children’s chairs. Characteristic features include visible veneer layers at the edges, rubber shock mounts as flexible connections between seat shell and frame, and veneers in maple, birch, walnut, rosewood, and — in the early years — calico ash.

From 1948 onward, fiberglass was added, developed for the MoMA competition “International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design”. The shell chairs of the DAX, DAR, RAR, and DSW series, in their original versions until 1989, display the typical fibrous surface texture with visible glass fiber bundles, the “rope edge” of the early Zenith production (1950–1953), and a characteristic translucency when viewed in backlight. Simultaneously, the Eames worked with chrome-plated and black-coated steel wire (Wire Chair DKR, 1951), with aluminum (Aluminum Group, 1958, and Soft Pad, 1969), and finally with rosewood, die-cast aluminum, and leather upholstery in the Lounge Chair 670 and Ottoman 671. Lesser-known pieces — such as the ESU Storage Units (1949/50) with lacquered plywood surfaces in zinc chromate yellow, dimensional white, and red, or the Hang-It-All coat rack (1953) — also belong to this material universe.

Regional Schools, Companions, and Manufacturing Facilities

The Eames never worked in a vacuum. In the late 1930s, Charles Eames met Eero Saarinen at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, with whom he won the 1940 MoMA competition “Organic Design in Home Furnishings”. Cranbrook under Eliel Saarinen was the American counterpart to European modernism and the starting point for an entire generation: Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia — who later developed the Wire Chair for Knoll — and Ruth Adler Schnee.

In Los Angeles, where Charles and Ray moved in 1941, a second frame of reference emerged: the Case Study House Program of the magazine Arts & Architecture under John Entenza. Case Study House #8, the Eames House in Pacific Palisades from 1949, remains a manifesto of this California modernism to this day, alongside the work of Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, Craig Ellwood, and Raphael Soriano. On the production side, three names are central: Evans Products in Venice, California, for the early plywood series; Herman Miller under George Nelson as Design Director for worldwide distribution; and Vitra in Weil am Rhein, which has held the European licenses since 1957 and today holds the original rights for Europe and the Middle East. Moving within this environment were contemporaries such as George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, and Alexander Girard, whose textiles were frequently staged alongside Eames furniture.

Authenticity, Condition, and What Collectors Should Check

For Eames pieces, labeling is decisive for dating. Early Herman Miller productions carry circular or rectangular paper and foil labels, often inscribed “Herman Miller Furniture Company, Zeeland, Michigan”. From the mid-1950s onward, the black-and-white “M” logo (designed from 1946 by Irving Harper in George Nelson’s office) appears, and later embossed metal plaques. For Vitra productions, the embossed plastic or metal type plates beneath the seat shell or on the frame are informative.

For the Plywood Chairs (LCW, DCW, LCM, DCM), check the shock mounts: original rubber dampers age, harden, and detach; a professionally executed replacement is conservatorially accepted, provided the plywood shells were not damaged by drilling during the process. Look for veneer surfaces without large-scale repainting, intact edge layers, and — in early editions — the 5-2-5 layering of the seat shell.

For the Fiberglass Shells, one distinguishes the Zenith Rope Edge series (1950–1953, with an inlaid hemp rope at the shell edge), the early Herman Miller productions through the mid-1950s, and the later series through 1989. Subsequent reissues from 1999 onward at Herman Miller and from 2004 at Vitra differ in material composition (today partly polypropylene or newly formulated fiberglass), color palette, and floor glides. For the Lounge Chair 670, details such as the number of veneer layers in the shells (early editions with 5 layers of rosewood, later with 7), the shape of the backrest connection, the down filling of the early cushions, and the original base plate of the Ottoman are telling. Regarding rosewood, note the Washington Convention on species protection (CITES): Dalbergia woods from pre-production before 1992 are tradeable with appropriate documentation.

In terms of condition: patina on aluminum, slight craquelé patterns in the fiberglass, and subtle signs of wear on the leather are part of the history and do not diminish an original’s value. Structural interventions, replaced shells, repainted plywood surfaces, or ill-fitting upholstery fabrics, however, significantly reduce provenance and value.
